My intent with this body of pastel portraits depicting various people is to tell a story about the subject along the same lines as photojournalism, much like Vermeer did with his portraits and work. I want to capture the eyes of my subject because you then have captured their soul and spirit
Portraiture for me is like breathing life into a drawing and watching the subject come to life. The drawing starts rough and loose and a bit lifeless. Then you start layering and building and shaping. With every stroke you feel the need to keep going and pushing towards the finished image.
So with this new series of pastel portraits, my intent as an artist is to create artwork with real feeling and emotional depth in order to communicate my ideas and make a connection with the viewer in order to evoke an emotional response, whether it be joy, sadness or laughter. If I can touch the viewer then I have accomplished my goal.
